Thousands of people enjoyed a Saxon living history encampment and re-enactment of the first King of England’s coronation, as part of an extensive cultural festival.

Kingston 2025 is a major sixmonth celebration to mark the 1100th anniversary of the crowning of King Athelstan, the first king of a united England, in the heart of Kingston in 925 AD.

During the re-enactment, King Athelstan led the Saxons, mayoral party and shield-beating warriors across the Thames at Kingston Bridge to be crowned in Canbury Gardens.

The living history encampment was held over a weekend and featuredbattle demonstrations, storytelling, games and crafts. The event also hosted more than 30 community stalls, farm animals, falconry displays, music, beekeeping, flax growing, tapestry-making, a working Saxon forge and a virtual reality experience.

Scott Furlong, Kingston 2025 Programme Director, Kingston Council, said:Not only was Athel’s Town great fun but we heard from our residents that they appreciated an event that was free, focused on Kingston’s history, and provided an opportunity for all generations to enjoy time together. It showcased so many local groups that make Kingston the fantastic place it is today and continue to strengthen our community.

In September, Kingston 2025 presents a River Cultures Festival on the waterfront and the return of the muchloved Kingston Carnival.
